Home Heating Facts and Figures

Energy experts are predicting substantial increase costs to heat your home this winter.

We are concerned that might drive people to use supplemental heating sources, People who never used portable heating devices may try so this winter which will probably trigger more, heating fires.

During the cold winter months, heaters become the # 1 cause of fires.

Two of every three home heating fires and two of every three related deaths were attributed to portable and fixed space heaters and related equipment.

Only about 20% of home heating equipment fires began with central heating units.

Space heaters and fireplaces can make a house toasty warm…but…caution must be used when using these devices.

Above chart shows fireplaces and chimneys are the causes for most heating fires. Fixed/portable heaters and wood stoves cause the most deaths.

Portable Electric Heaters

  • When buying a new heater make sure it carries the mark of an independent testing agency (UL – FM)
  • Maintain 36-inch clearance space from anything that can burn (curtains, furniture, bed etc)
  • Do not use extension cords…if you must make sure it is a heavy-duty cord marked with a power rating at least as high as that on the label.
  • Make sure you purchase a space heater that shuts off if tipped over.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended.
  • Keep electric heaters away from water. Do not dry clothes

Fire Places and Chimneys

  • Screen over fireplace to prevent sparks from flying into the room
  • Allow ashes to cool before disposing in a metal container
  • Have wood, coal stoves, fireplaces chimneys, chimney connectors installed by professionals; according to manufacturers specifications and directions. Have all equipment inspected and cleaned annually. (Install, maintenance)
  • Burn only dry hard wood, nothing green or pines (soft)

Liquid fuel heaters - Kerosene

  • Use the proper type of fuel in liquid fuel heaters.
  • Kerosene heaters need ventilation; do not fuel hot;
  • Be aware of spilled fuel when fueling.
  • Incomplete combustion
